One Fertilizer Doesn’t Fit Every Plant: How to Match Nutrition to What You’re Planting

Walk through a garden center and you may leave with five completely different plants.

A flowering annual. A new palm. A tomato plant. A landscape shrub. Maybe even grass plugs for the lawn.

They are all plants, so it can be tempting to grab one fertilizer and use it everywhere.

But plants do not all use nutrients in exactly the same way. The type of plant and what you want it to do should help determine the nutrition you provide during establishment.

Start With the Three Numbers

Most fertilizers display three numbers representing nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, commonly called N-P-K.

These nutrients each play different roles in plant growth, which is one reason fertilizer formulations vary. A product intended for a flowering annual does not necessarily need the same nutrient balance as one designed for a palm or a grass plug.

NutriPod® offers different planting-time formulas tailored to different plant categories rather than using one universal blend.

Annuals: Support Roots and Blooms

Annual flowers are expected to establish quickly and put on a show.

NutriPod® Annual Nutrition uses a 5-8-8 formulation designed for annual flowering plants. The pod is placed into the planting hole, where its slow-release granules provide nutrition during early establishment.

For gardeners planting seasonal color, the process eliminates measuring loose fertilizer for every individual plant.

Flowering Shrubs: Think Longer-Term Growth

Shrubs have a different job.

Rather than completing their life cycle in one season, shrubs need to establish a permanent root system while producing foliage, branches and, depending on the species, flowers.

NutriPod® Flowering Shrub Nutrition uses a 12-3-12 NPK ratio and is designed for use when planting shrubs and other appropriate landscape plants.

Palms: Use Palm-Specific Nutrition

Palms are another category where plant-specific nutrition matters.

NutriPod® Palm Nutrition uses an 8-2-12 formulation and is intended for planting and transplanting palms. Current product guidance places the pod near the root zone during installation so nutrients become available as the plant establishes.

Vegetables: Feed Establishment With the Harvest in Mind

Vegetable plants are working toward something different: roots, foliage, flowers and eventually fruit or harvestable growth.

NutriPod® Vegetable Nutrition uses a 5-8-10 formulation. Like the other products in the line, it is designed for planting-time use rather than requiring gardeners to measure individual amounts of loose granules.

Grass Plugs: Establish and Spread

Grass plugs need to root into the surrounding soil and begin spreading.

NutriPod® Grass Plug Nutrition uses a 17-1-10 NPK ratio and is placed in the planting hole before the grass plug.

Feed What You Are Actually Planting

Gardening becomes easier when you stop treating every plant as if it has the same job.

A palm is not a petunia. A shrub is not a tomato. A grass plug is not a flowering annual.

Choosing nutrition based on the plant type gives you a more intentional way to feed during one of the most important stages of the plant’s life: establishment.

With NutriPod®, the process stays simple: Throw and Go!
